My journey so far
Leading a team of 200 people
I’m currently an Area Manager on secondment from the Lead Coach role. I support, coach and mentor a team of four. Collectively we lead a team of around 200 colleagues across 40 stores.
On a daily basis I’m out with my team supporting stores, as well as planning for our growth strategy, our people development options and finding innovative solutions for our daily challenges.
After I joined, I worked in a prison on a branch contract. I became a Pharmacy Manager, and had various positions in Gloucestershire before relocating up to Manchester. A while later, I became an Area Support Coach. In June 2018, I was successful in my application for an Area Manager secondment, and I’m now enjoying the new challenge.
I get fantastic support from my line managers and HR Business Partners. It’s important to be clear about where you want to go and absorb the feedback given. Our leadership team wants us to develop… embrace it!
One of my previous Area Managers was my mentor, and is now a really good friend. They helped by supporting me, understanding me and what I need. They also promoted me to their peers and colleagues, and provided quality feedback that was tailored and easy to process, so I could absorb it and change my behaviours.
Tips for the top
To succeed here, I think you have to always be curious and ask for feedback. You’re allowed to make mistakes; just make sure you talk things through with your line manager to gain learnings. You’ll be given the freedom to go and explore, and try new ways of working; to utilise different areas of expertise from different people. Make sure you always try and absorb something new from someone you have met that day. Finally, take time to reflect and try a different way; it doesn’t always work, but sometimes you can get a better result.
I’m passionate about the future of pharmacy, and I feel that LloydsPharmacy is dedicated to keeping it a clinical profession that supports the local community. There are opportunities here for those that want it. We recruit on behaviours and develop skills. Anyone from any background with the right attitude can be successful here.
